Our Founding

Born from Tragedy, Driven by Purpose

Secure Canada was founded in 2004 by families of Canadian victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The organization’s origins are deeply rooted in the profound loss and grief experienced on that tragic day, which forever changed the lives of its founders and the world. In the wake of 9/11, Secure Canada’s founders were determined to transform their personal pain into a force for good.

In the wake of 9/11, Secure Canada’s founders were determined to transform their personal pain into a force for good. They sought to prevent other families from suffering similar losses by addressing the threats of terrorism and extremism in a proactive and innovative manner. This resolve led to the creation of Secure Canada, initially known as the Canadian Coalition Against Terror.

A Mission to Protect Canada

From its inception, Secure Canada’s mission has been clear: to combat terrorism, extremism, and related threats by creating transformative laws, public policies, and alliances that strengthen Canada’s national security and democracy. One of the organization’s most significant achievements is the drafting of the Justice for Victims of Terrorism Act (JVTA), which enables victims of terror and their families to seek justice against state and non-state actors that sponsor terrorism. This groundbreaking legislation has led to over $7 billion in judgments for victims’ families.

A Legacy of Innovation and Impact

Secure Canada has continued to evolve, becoming a pivotal force in shaping Canada’s approach to national security. The organization has pioneered new strategies on issues such as foreign interference, hostage-taking, and the rights of terror victims. Its work has not only garnered national attention but has also earned international recognition, including from the United Nations.

Today, Secure Canada remains driven by the same commitment that inspired its founding: to protect Canada’s citizens, uphold democratic values, and build a safer, more secure future for all.
